Oliver Whitehouse's Rise Of Orion could best be described as gloriously etheral progressive synth-pop. The album is space-themed, but the space comes from the lush, ambient soundscapes rather than the lyrics.
With influences such as Yes, Rick Wakeman and Steven Wilson, synthesiers play a key role, along with shimmering acoustic guitars and poignant lyrics, touching on themes of self-discovery, connection with others and recovery. It is effortlessly emotive and communicates feeling in a way that not many songs can.
Whitehouse's creativity and musical sensitivity shine through in this impressive debut, showing he can pull listeners along with his expanded experimentations, yet deliver concise, clearly-executed pop songs when it counts.
